What type of wood do you use?
Many different species can be used including pine, oak, fir, and recycled timbers depending on personal preference and budget considerations. We primarily use white pine and recycled fir for their natural beauty and availability in our geographical area.
Does using the timber frame method cost more than conventional construction?
Construction costs can vary widely depending on complexity of the frame and the species of wood used. Generally we find that most of our white pine timber frames will average $ 20 - 25 per sq. ft. more than the cost of a stick framed house.
Can a portion of the home be timber frame with the balance being conventional construction?
Building a "hybrid" home that combines the beauty of timber framing in the main living areas with the cost effectiveness of using conventional construction in the balance of the home is gaining popularity. The two methods of construction work very nicely together to provide greater flexibility of design and pricing.
How do you enclose the frame?
Frames can be enclosed in two main ways. The first method uses standard stick framing built around the outside of the frame. The other option is to use Stress Skin insulated panels for the exterior walls and ceilings. Roofing, exterior and interior wall finishes are the same as any other home in either method. Given the geographical climate we are building in, we prefer to frame the roof using standard methods providing an air space for circulation and prevention of condensation. The walls can be constructed with either standard framing or Stress Skin insulated panels.
Are timber frame homes energy efficient?
Because the home is enclosed around the outside of the frame it can be sealed up very tightly and an extremely high level of energy efficiency is achieved. We are certified R2000 builders and can provide that certification with it's associated level of efficiency and comfort to your home.
